Anyone who’s been to Starved Rock State Park on a holiday weekend knows about the huge crowds and the parking issues.
Park and Lodge staff is working on the issues with some help from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Northern Illinois University.
Lodge President Amy Trimble says a study will soon be underway:
Trimble says the study will also look into park overpopulation. It might turn out that adding more parking won’t help because there are already too many people with the parking that’s there.
Starved Rock Foundation President Pam Grivetti says another problem to deal with is Conservation Police being occupied with traffic control.
When officers are dealing with parking issues they can’t be on trails keeping people safe.
The issues were discussed at a meeting earlier this week in Utica with lawmakers and emergency personnel.
