It’s been about four years since the Tri-County Opportunities Council has offered a cooling assistance program for the summer, but people who struggled to pay bills last winter can still apply for help.
Tammy Saenz is the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program Director with the Tri-County Opportunities Council.
She says people have until the end of May to apply for help retroactively.
Saenz says there is a possibility that Illinois could call for emergency cooling assistance, in which case she would have program to help people this summer. But that’s not guaranteed.
People with a household income below 150% of the Federal Poverty level qualify for assistance.
The next round of assistance will start for certain people in the fall and winter.
