It is with great sadness that the family of Leo “Brud” Francis Kelly, 87, of Earlville, Illinois, announces his passing on October 7th, 2018.
Visitation will be held at Schwarz Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 10th from 3:00-7:00pm. The funeral service will be held at Holy Cross Church in Mendota, IL on Thursday, October 11th at 10:30amwith Father Bob Spilman as the officiant. Burial will follow the funeral at Holy Cross Cemetery in Mendota. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Schwarz Funeral Home.
Brud was born in Mendota, Illinois on June 19th, 1931 to Tom and Lucy (Guilfoyle) Kelly. He was the second oldest of ten siblings, nine boys and one girl.
He graduated from Holy Cross Grade School and St. Bede Academy. He then went on to serve in the Navy for four years and was about to reenlist but instead married a “pretty little Irish girl who wanted a big family”. Brud and Anna Mae McManus were married on August 11th 1956. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years.
Brud worked as a farmer his whole life growing sweet corn and beans for Del Monte and as a heavy equipment operating engineer for Local 150 for many years. He enjoyed riding and raising horses, calves and chickens, he was a gardener and enjoyed watching the Cubs. He was also actively involved in many organizations over the years including: Illinois Valley Horseman’s Association (director and influential member), Earlville COOP (president for many years), The Knights of Columbus (4th Degree Knight), The American Legion, The Moose, The Mendota Elks, The Holy Name Society, he was a 4-H Leader and a lifetime member of the NRA.
He is survived by his wife Anna Mae of Earlville, five children: Mike (Lisa Finnell) Kelly, Karen (Dave) Harmon, Jim Kelly, Lori (Craig) Chapman, Julie (Rich Harding) Kelly, fifteen grandchildren: Sarah Heerrman, Molly (Matt Myers) Kelly, Casey (Julie) Kelly, Edward (Crystal) Kelly, Tom (Jennifer) Harmon, Tim (Angie) Harmon, Jeff (Tami) Harmon, Veda Kelly, Ashley (Jeremy) Arellano, Brad (Brooke) Chapman, Sam (Christine) Bennington, Kayla Kelly, Matthew Kelly, Jenna (Pete) Pfau, and Justina Whalen, eighteen great-grandchildren: Braydon & Mary Heerrmann, Aubrey & Alivia Myers, Riley, Blake, & Callie Kelly, Connor, Payden, & Garrett Kelly, Logan & Landon Harmon, Addison Lee & Preslee Harmon, Liam & Declan Arellano, Braxton Chapman, and Oliver Pfau, five siblings: Tom (Rita) Kelly of Palos Heights, Pat (Marge) Kelly of Utica, Bill (Mary Ann) Kelly of Anchorage, Alaska, Dick (Judy) Kelly of Mendota and Mary Lou Saylor of Mendota; two sister-in-laws: Mary Lynn Kelly and Jean Kelly.
Brud is preceded in death by his two sons: Daniel Thomas Kelly 9/28/1990 and Douglas Edward Kelly 6/30/2006 and four siblings: Don Kelly, Joseph Kelly, Jack Kelly, and Hank Kelly.
He will be forever remembered and greatly missed.
