Judge refuses insanity finding, convicts man of robbery

A LaSalle County judge Wednesday found a man guilty of armed robbery, home invasion, and possession of a stolen vehicle. Twenty-three year old DeAngelo Harris, once listed as living in Country Club Hills, faces up to 50 years in prison when he returns to court for sentencing in January.

The defense asked Judge Cynthia Raccuglia to find Harris insane. That would have meant he’s incapable of understanding what he did was wrong and it likely would mean he’s sent away for mental health treatment instead of prison. Prosecutors argued Harris was faking the more serious aspects of his mental illness during evaluations more than a year ago when he was unfit for trial. Raccuglia said there’s no doubt that Harris is mentally ill, but it’s also obvious that Harris is better now.

Harris was arrested in March last year after he got into a house and fired a gun while stealing a wallet and other items from a home.
