January is radon awareness month.
LaSalle County Emergency management Agency Director Connie Brooks says the gas is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency statistics says lung cancer caused by radon kills some 21,000 people each year.
Brooks recommends buying a radon test kit. If it finds that there is too much radon in the air an expert can be hired to take care of it.
Pipes can be used to reroute radon out of a home or business and into the air.
People can find where to get a test kit and find radon experts online at the Illinois Emergency Management Agency website.
