Marseilles Commissioner candidates differ on Nabisco Building, proposed campground

Just how should the City of Marseilles deal with the long-abandoned Nabisco building?

Commissioner candidate Nathan Schaefer says the city should look at the options with the owner.

Candidate Kevin Fleming says he’d like to see it gone.

Ed Cavanaugh says the building has historical value.

Candidates were also somewhat split on the issue of a proposed campground east of the city. Candidate Jim Hanlon supports it.

Candidate Mary Oslanzi isn’t so sure it’s a good idea.

Incumbent Gary Lewey says there was a similar situation with another development.

Several candidates talked about expanding the city north to I-80.

Incumbent Bobby Kaminski is among them.

Fellow incumbent Bob Davis says dealing with the city’s aging infrastructure should be a priority too.

Candidate Jay Delay says the city needs to deal with crime.

Incumbent Jim “Buck” Buckingham says the city’s drug problem and abandoned buildings need to be cleaned up.

The candidates spoke at a forum moderated by the WCMY news team Wednesday at the Marseilles Lions Club.
