STERLING – John Bruner had a double among his two hits and an RBI for the Pirates (9-6, 2-2). Jared Herzog also drove in a run, and also tossed six innings of one run ball to get the win. Ben Lundy pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.


Sterling 3, Ottawa 2

STERLING – The Lady Golden Warriors scored three times in the seventh inning to win the first of two NIB12 West showdowns with Ottawa.

Jenna Nink homered and scored twice for the Lady Pirates (10-2-1, 1-1-1). Sloan Gayan (9-2) fanned 13 hitters over 6 2/3 innings in the pitcher’s circle.


Blast of winter calls off spring sports

UNDATED – Snow on Sunday led to cancellations on Monday, with several area events called off.

Among varsity contests, Seneca baseball and softball at home against Plano were postponed to Wednesday, while Streator baseball and softball hosting Manteno were pushed back to April 24. Streator girls’ soccer at home against Herscher was moved to April 26.

Serena baseball and softball vs. Earlville-Leland was also postponed with a makeup date not yet announced. Marquette baseball and softball against Amboy, and Ottawa boys’ tennis at Princeton were canceled.
