GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD: State qualifiers for Ottawa, Streator; Seneca wins Sectional

MULTIPLE SITES – When the IHSA State Track and Field Championships begin Thursday, several local athletes will be taking part.

Ottawa’s Maddy Smith won the pole vault and broke her own school record in the event by clearing 11 feet, 6 inches at Friday’s IHSA Class 3A Moline Sectional. Sam Satterfield won the discus (125-10) and placed fourth in the shot put (39-0), qualifying for State in both events.

At the Class 2A La Salle-Peru Sectional, Lana Krohe of Streator finished second in the shot put (35-7) to qualify for State.

Seneca won its own Class 1A Sectional with 154 points and will have athletes in 13 events at State, including event winners Brooklyn Giertz in the pole vault (11-0) and Erica Techmanski in the shot put (37-0 1/2). The Seneca 3,200-meter relay (10:33.70), 800 relay (1:48.55) and 1,600 relay (4:20.42) all finished first as well.

Mara Bruno was second in the long jump (17-7), breaking the school record in the process. She also finished second in the 100 (12.60) and the 200 (25.89). Amber Vroman (800, 2:30.77) and Natalie Carajohn (400, 1:04.31) scored runner-up finishes as well.

Grace Alley (35-1 1/2) and Justine Ursua (34-2) finished third and fourth in the triple jump, qualifying for State on distance. Carissa Simon (fifth in the long jump, 16-6 1/4) and Audrey Jenkins (third in the 3,200, 11:40.14; fourth in the 1,600, 5:30.73) also qualified for State by exceeding the qualifying standard in their events.

Class 1A preliminaries are Thursday with Class 2A and 3A prelims going off Friday at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston. Finals for all three classes will be held Saturday.
