One more abandoned home in Marseilles finds an owner

The City of Marseilles has just four more abandoned homes in the floodplain east of downtown still to deal with.

Mayor Jim Hollenbeck says they’ve demolished or sold around ten since the 2013 flood caused major damage in the neighborhood.

The council approved selling one at 504 Wallace Street for $12,500 Wednesday.

Since the flood, the city has heightened the levee around the neighborhood.

The city is also looking at ways to deal with abandoned homes outside of the floodplain.

Owners are sometimes hard to locate and there’s often court action to go through before the city can do anything.
