Ottawa to observe its 26th annual Firefighters Memorial Day Sunday

The Ottawa Fire Department’s 26th annual Firefighters Memorial Day event begins at ten Sunday, May 19. Chris Saar, in charge of the memorial, says it’ll start with the usual solemn ceremony in front of the police and fire station on Lafayette St.

Saar says this year marks 160 years since Ottawa has had its own fire department. The memorabilia at the fire station says it goes back to 1895, but Saar says that’s the beginning of the full time fire department. He says part time fire fighting paid for by the city goes back to 1859.
