WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Marquette wins State baseball title with rout of Gibault Catholic

BASEBALL

Marquette 14, Gibault Catholic 5

PEORIA – Marquette is the IHSA Class 1A State baseball champion in a rout, pouring on eight runs in the second inning to put the Hawks in a hole they could not climb from.

Jack Snook finished a triple short of the cycle, going 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs for the Crusaders (33-1). He launched a no-doubt two-run homer that put Marquette ahead in the big second inning, the second of nine Crusader hits in the inning.

Max Donahue and Nick Melvin each went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Nate Melvin plated three runs, and Shane Reynolds was 3 for 4 with an RBI as Marquette peppered the field with 16 hits.

John Thompson (11-0) allowed four earned runs over six innings for the win, and Luke Couch got the final three outs to clinch Marquette’s first team sport State championship in school history.

SOFTBALL

Bishop McNamara 8, Ottawa 3

JOLIET – An historic season for the Lady Pirates ended Saturday in the IHSA Class 3A Joliet Catholic Sectional championship game.

The Lady Irish jumped on the board with two runs in the opening half-inning, and led 4-1 in the sixth inning when Gillian McDermott hit a grand slam to put the game out of reach.

Jenna Nink and Sloan Gayan hit solo home runs in the seventh for Ottawa (24-8), which was playing in the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history. Zoe Harris also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Gayan (21-7) allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits, and struck out 10 in the complete game loss.
