Coming off three straight losses at St. Louis in which they scored six total runs, the Cubs broke loose with a five-run sixth inning. Javier Báez began the onslaught with a run-scoring double, one of his three RBIs, as Chicago picked up its second win in its past eight games. Lester was in control from the outset.

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles selected Oregon State switch-hitting catcher Adley Rutschman with the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft. The announcement at MLB Network studios marked the second time the Orioles led off the draft. They took LSU pitcher Ben McDonald in 1989.

CHICAGO (AP) — Outfielder Carlos González was promoted by the Cubs from Triple-A Iowa and was set to make his Chicago debut. The 33-year-old hit .210 with two homers, seven RBIs and 33 strikeouts in 30 games with Cleveland, then was designated for assignment on May 22. CHICAGO (AP) — Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox has been one of baseball’s best pitchers since the beginning of May. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Alex Binelas’ walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Trey Leonard and top-seeded Louisville edged Illinois State 4-3 in an NCAA regional final, sending the Cardinals to their sixth Super Regional in the past seven seasons. After committing a center field error in the top of the ninth for an unearned run that helped the No. 3 Redbirds to tie the game, Leonard reached on a sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on Binelas’ bases-loaded single up the middle.
