Streator movie theater owner asks for tax on showing movies

The Streator City Council is considering a movie tax. The Eagle 6 movie theater owners are asking for it. City Manager David Plyman says some of the tax money would go to the theater owner to expand the building and add screens.

Plyman says simply adding to the ticket price would mean the owner has to share the extra revenue with the movie producers. But a tax can be rebated without Hollywood studios getting a cut. The bottom line is the price to see a movie wouldn’t be as high with the tax as with just raising the ticket price to help the owner raise the money.

Mayor Jimmie Lansford says he’d want the city to keep some of the money. It may come up at a future city council meeting.
