2019 All-WCMY Baseball Team

2019 All-WCMY Baseball Team

Two pitchers, one player at each position, and five additional players were selected to the All-WCMY Baseball Team, chosen among players from Marquette, Ottawa, Seneca, Serena and Streator. Each school received at least one First Team selection. Position players required two plate appearances per team games played to be eligible, while pitchers required two innings per appearances. Athletes were selected either as pitchers or according to their primary positions in the field.

MVP: Luke Couch (Second Base, Marquette, So.)

Postseason Honors: Tri-County First Team All-Conference, IHSBCA First Team All-State
There would be no sophomore slump for Couch, who improved in every offensive statistical category—that after a very impressive freshman season that saw him earn an All-WCMY Honorable Mention. Couch matched the team lead with 14 doubles, and led the team outright in walks and on-base percentage (.504). He also emerged as the Crusaders’ closer in the postseason, nailing down a couple of saves and getting the final three outs in the State championship game. The Crusaders don’t get to Peoria without contributions from up and down the lineup, but arguably nobody had a bigger impact all over the field than Marquette’s super sophomore.

Pitcher/Shortstop: Connor Baker (Serena, Jr.)

Batting Stats: 25 GP, .397, 3 XBH, 15 RBI, 21 R, 17 BB, 14 SB
Pitching Stats: 9 GP, 1-4, 35 IP, 3.60 ERA, 45 K, 1.69 WHIP
Postseason Honors: Little 10 All-Conference
Baker was the Huskers’ ace pitcher and a formidable bat, leading Serena in batting average, walks and stolen bases. He was an All-WCMY Honorable Mention last season.

Pitcher/Shortstop: Sam Grushkin (Seneca, Sr.)

Batting Stats: .440, 9 HR, 16 XBH, 28 RBI, 38 R, 13 BB, 15 SB

Postseason Honors: Tri-County Player of the Year, Tri-County First Team All-Conference
The listening area’s home run leader and batting champion, Grushkin was more than a big bat. He also led the listening area in strikeouts with nearly 11 K’s per seven innings. A repeat All-WCMY selection and also a multiple-time All-WCMY selection in basketball, Grushkin will attend Upper Iowa University to play baseball.

Pitcher: Bryce Jones (Marquette, Sr.)

Pitching Stats: 12 GP, 7-1, 52 IP, 1.48 ERA, 61 K, 1.23 WHIP
Postseason Honors: Tri-County Pitcher of the Year, Tri-County Second Team All-Conference
The senior southpaw pitched a five-inning perfect game against Henry-Senachwine in April, recording a career-high 11 strikeouts in the process. In the postseason, Jones allowed only one earned run over 12 innings on the bump. A first-time All-WCMY selection, Jones will continue his baseball career at Kankakee Community College.

Pitcher: John Thompson (Marquette, Jr.)

Pitching Stats: 13 GP, 11-0, 72 IP, 1.75 ERA, 70 K, 0.96 WHIP
Postseason Honors: Tri-County Second Team All-Conference, IHSBCA First Team All-State
Thompson won all four of his playoff starts for Marquette, including the championship game against Gibault Catholic. Thompson fired a five-inning no-hitter against Henry-Senachwine in April, and went four straight appearances—a stretch of 31 total innings—without allowing an earned run to begin May. It is Thompson’s second All-WCMY selection.

Catcher: Sean McGurk (Streator, Fr.)

Catcher: Myles Mitchell (Seneca, Jr.)

Batting Stats: .419, 2 HR, 10 XBH, 26 RBI, 23 R, 16 BB, 3 SB

Mitchell was third in the WCMY listening area in batting average, and showed off some wheels with an area-best four triples. Mitchell is a first-time All-WCMY selection.

First Base: Kadon Harth (Ottawa, Jr.)

Batting Stats: .333, 4 HR, 10 XBH, 22 RBI, 18 R, 16 BB, 8 SB
Postseason Honors: NIB12 West Honorable Mention
Harth led the Pirates in “pop,” belting team-best marks with four homers and 10 extra-base hits. He gets his first All-WCMY selection.

First Base: Haydon Price (Marquette, Sr.)

Batting Stats: 34 GP, .333, 2 HR, 12 XBH, 31 RBI, 21 R, 14 BB, 1 SB
The senior first baseman had a regional to remember, cranking a 3-run homer in the semifinal against Midland and a game-breaking grand slam in the final against Dwight. In all, Price drove in 11 runs over seven postseason games as the Crusaders slugged their way to the title. Price will continue his baseball career at Marian University.

Third Base: Wyatt Hill (Ottawa, Sr.)

Batting Stats: .296, 5 2B, 11 RBI, 21 R, 14 BB, 11 SB
Hill pounded out 10 multi-hits and tied for the team lead in stolen bases en route to a repeat All-WCMY selection.

Shortstop: Nate Melvin (Marquette, Sr.)

Batting Stats: 34 GP, .385, 13 XBH, 27 RBI, 45 R, 17 BB, 26 SB
Postseason Honors: Tri-County First Team All-Conference
In a year with several tremendous shortstops, Melvin was the shortstop for the State champions and had another terrific season. A repeat All-WCMY choice, Melvin led the listening area in runs and stolen bases while leading off for the Crusaders, and led Marquette with 15 multi-hit games. He’ll join teammate Logan Komater on the Monmouth College baseball team next.

Outfield/Pitcher: Jared Herzog (Ottawa, Sr.)

Batting Stats: .333, 7 XBH, 13 RBI, 26 R, 18 BB, 11 SB
Pitching Stats: 10 GP, 5-5, 45.2 IP, 2.45 ERA, 59 K, 1.23 WHIP
Postseason Honors: NIB12 West First Team All-Conference
Herzog earned a second All-WCMY selection after a consistently excellent season at the plate that included a team-best 12 multi-hit games. And what a finish on the hill: Herzog closed out the regular season with a two-hit shutout of La Salle-Peru, then fired a five-inning no-no against Kankakee in the regional semifinal.

Outfield: Logan Komater (Marquette, Sr.)

Batting Stats: 34 GP, .417, 1 HR, 17 XBH, 41 RBI, 37 R, 9 BB, 20 SB
Postseason Honors: Tri-County First Team All-Conference
For all of the great things Komater did as a senior—and there were many—perhaps the most memorable was the no-doubt, exclamation-point home run in the Super Sectional against Salt Fork. The reigning Tri-County Player of the Year and a repeat All-WCMY selection, Logan led the listening area in RBIs and extra-base hits, and tied teammate Luke Couch for the area lead with 14 doubles. He’ll go into the record books as a State champion and a program legend. Along with teammate Nate Melvin, he heads next to Monmouth College to play baseball.

Outfield: Nick Melvin (Marquette, So.)

Batting Stats: 34 GP, .379, 9 XBH, 25 RBI, 29 R, 11 BB, 19 SB
Postseason Honors: Tri-County Honorable Mention
Melvin, who earns his first All-WCMY selection, put up outstanding numbers while hitting in the bottom third of the order all season. With five seniors ahead of him in the order graduating, a big junior season could be on the way for Melvin.

Outfield: Jack Snook (Marquette, Sr.)

Batting Stats: 34 GP, .429, 2 HR, 14 XBH, 29 RBI, 28 R, 5 BB, 8 SB
Postseason Honors: Tri-County Second Team All-Conference
After outstanding football and basketball seasons, why wouldn’t Snook have an outstanding baseball season? He shined brightest on the big stage, going 7 for 10 with five RBIs and three extra-base hits in Peoria, including a big fly in the championship game. It boosted him to Marquette’s batting title and second in the area in batting average, as well as his first All-WCMY selection.
