Railroad crossing work to inconvenience Illinois 23 drivers

Drivers who cross the Illinois Railway track on Columbus St. by Deleon St. in Ottawa won’t be able to for a few days next week. The rail company is repairing the crossing. Starting Tuesday, it’ll be closed.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is advising southbound Illinois 23 drivers who would go through town to take Interstate 80 west to Illinois 71 and continue into Ottawa on Norris Dr. Likewise, northbound drivers should go east onto Norris Dr. toward Interstate 80 and then take the Interstate back to Illinois 23.

IDOT says the project could last two days. But signs put up Wednesday morning said five days. IDOT Engineer Duane Lukkari says the railroad company’s sign company made a mistake. He says the project should last just Tuesday and Wednesday, and it could even be done Wednesday morning.

A sign put up by a company working for Illinois Railway Wednesday morning said the crossing repair would last five days, but an IDOT engineer tells WCMY News it should take just two.
