County rejects grain elevator company’s request for highway entrance

Most LaSalle County Board members said no Thursday to Ruff Brothers Grain’s plans for a wider driveway into the grain elevator in Leonore. County Highway Engineer Larry Kinzer says the main problem the company has there is southbound truck traffic taking both highway lanes to turn right into the elevator yard. He suggests the company buy a wedge shaped piece of land north of the entrance for a turn lane for southbound trucks.

Safety manager Jon Janz says Ruff Brothers has tried to buy neighboring land to make a better driveway, but the owners want too much. He says land that’s worth $40,000 is offered at $75,000 or more when residential owners find out the company wants to buy.

Janz says there’s no plan B. Trucks will have to keep waiting or maneuvering around each other and other traffic when things get busy during harvest season. But in case there’s a traffic crash there, he’s getting a copy of the roll call on Thursday’s vote to try to deflect any lawsuits onto the county.
