Ottawa City Hall to go after vehicle sales tax non-payers

Ottawa residents who buy vehicles out of town often avoid paying the city’s 0.5% sales tax on them, and the city might soon start leaning on them to cough it up. City Clerk Shelly Munks says some dealers collect it for the city. But if they don’t, all the city gets is a notice from the state that says someone bought a vehicle or a trailer.

Mayor Dan Aussem says it’s up to the city to go after the money.

Munks says about 250 purchases every year fall through the cracks for an amount total she doesn’t know because the state doesn’t provide the sale price. City commissioners yesterday gave her the okay to get more aggressive about collecting.
