Ottawa High education fund deficit shrinks

Ottawa High School Supt. Mike Cushing says the budget for the next fiscal year looks a lot better than some budgets of the last several years. There’s still a deficit in the education fund, but it’s shrinking. It was $2.3 million two fiscal years ago, $1.3 million for the fiscal year that’s ending, and a projected $109,000 for the new fiscal year.

A big thing that’s helping the district this year is money from one of the tax increment financing districts in Ottawa. The area’s school districts negotiated for changes while the city got their consent to ask for an extension. The tax levy and the state’s new school funding formula are helping too.

There’ll be a budget hearing at 6:30pm on Monday, September 23.
