MONDAY ROUNDUP: Ottawa’s Lewis, Marquette’s Tkach named ICA Sectional Coaches of the Year


ICA honors for three area coaches

UNDATED – Ottawa head coach Adam Lewis and Marquette head coach Dave Tkach were awarded ICA Sectional Coach of the Year honors Monday.

Lewis led the Lady Pirates to a 24-8 finish and the program’s first-ever regional championship. Ottawa bowed out in the IHSA Class 3A Joliet Catholic Sectional title game to Bishop McNamara, which went on to finish fourth at State.

Tkach directed the Lady Crusaders to the Class 1A Amboy Regional title and a 22-6 finish after dropping the Indian Creek Sectional championship game to Saint Bede, which would finish third at State.

Also Monday, longtime Seneca head coach Dan Stecken was selected among the 2020 class for the ICA Hall of Fame. Stecken, who stepped down as coach following the 2019 season, finished his 14-year run at Seneca with a 321-168 record and four regional championships.


Marquette earns non-conference victory

Pontiac def. Streator, 25-18, 25-14

PONTIAC – Natali Haynes had three kills and Halie Grace added two kills for Streator (3-7), while Leticia Cruz had five digs and Taytum Williams tallied four digs in the loss.

The Lady Bulldogs were swept at all three levels, losing the sophomore match 25-9, 25-21; and the freshman match, 25-16, 25-15.

Leilani Zavada served four aces, Zoe Murphy had three kills, and Emma Grave contributed five digs in the freshman match for Streator.

Hall def. Serena, 25-19, 25-17

SPRING VALLEY – Paige Sexton piled up seven kills and three digs for Serena (2-3). Lexi May contributed three kills, four digs and two aces, while Taylor Staton had three blocks, and Lyla Thorpen finished with six assists and six digs. Katie Baker finished with four kills, six assists, seven digs and two aces in the loss, and Cheyenne Banister had six digs for the Serena defense.

Marquette 26, Seneca 14

OTTAWA – Logan Nelson rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown for Marquette (2-0). Vinny Battistelli, Tom Durdan and Jurnee Reed added touchdowns in the win. Battistelli and Brady Ewers each recorded six tackles, and Primo Patelli recovered a fumble.
