A week from today, bicycle riders will meet at the National Guard training facility in Marseilles to prepare for the 500-mile Gold Star Mission ride. They’ll spend the night and then ride to Pontiac Tuesday. By Saturday next week, they’ll have gone to Peoria, the Quad Cities, Rockford, and then St. Charles.
Organization president Dave Helfrich says the mission is to make sure fallen military members aren’t forgotten. And he doesn’t think it should be easy. So a short ride wouldn’t do.
The ride raises money for scholarships. Neither the riders nor the scholarship recipients are required to have military service or connections to other who do. However, Helfrich says most of the riders are current or former military members.
