West Nile virus activity low in the county, Health Dept. still says to avoid mosquito bites

West Nile Virus activity has been low in LaSalle County this year.

LaSalle County Health Educator Jenny Barrie says only one batch of mosquitoes, caught in Peru, has tested positive for the virus.

She says mosquito season isn’t over yet though.

Covering up skin and wearing insect repellent are the best ways to keep mosquitoes off.

It can vary, but usually cold weather in October kills off a lot of the mosquito population.

The county has tested over 2,600 mosquitoes so far.
