The Ottawa City Council has rejected a grievance over a retired fire fighter’s final pay. Lt. Brian Garland got a 20% pay bump for the last two pay periods to boost his pension. Mayor Dan Aussem says Garland also wanted a 20% bump in the amount of paid time off he had coming. The City Council disagrees with that.
The vote to that effect Tuesday night doesn’t affect the pension payments Garland gets. The ongoing pension payments are based on Garland’s final regular pay. Cashing in time off for vacation and sick days when a fire fighters retires makes for a one-time payment not considered in the pension formula.
