CHAMPAIGN – Rafael Munoz, Ethan Harsted and Micah Krueger of Ottawa are into the quarterfinals at the IHSA Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament.
The Ottawa trio all won their first round matches Thursday and will set their sights on medals when quarterfinals are contested around 11 a.m.
Munoz advanced with a 9-7 decision at 113 pounds over Wauconda’s Evan Husko. Harsted routed Joey Giurini of Riverside-Brookfield, winning by a 15-0 technical fall at 126 pounds. Krueger took a 7-0 decision at 132 pounds over Justin Wilcox of Harvard.
The Pirates’ Luke Fleming was dropped into wrestlebacks as he lost his first round match at 106 pounds to undefeated Justin Cardani of Champaign Centennial by a 22-6 technical fall.
Jayson Goplin of Streator is into wrestlebacks at 195 pounds after being pinned by Crystal Lake Central’s Seamus O’Donnell.
Class 2A first round wrestlebacks begin following quarterfinal matches.
In Class 1A, Ben Virgo of Seneca lost his opening match to Austin Weaver of Stanford Olympia, 9-1. Class 1A wrestlebacks follow quarterfinal matches, which are slated to begin at 8:30 a.m.
