Proactive life management taught in new program at Sheridan Correctional Center

A program that’s new at Sheridan Correctional Center teaches inmates self-discipline and how to be proactive instead of reactive. Foundations For Life instructor Cliff Parish says the participants may be in prison because of a lack of life management skills. Parish says he tell them that if they really want to be there and are benefiting, they’ll leave and never come back.

Their personal mission and legacy statements are printed on a certificate that the participant can frame. While many inmates sign up for activities just to have something to do, Parish says the ones who don’t want to be in the Foundations For Life class leave quickly because of the work.

The program is run by an organization called Freedom From Within, which operates programs at other prisons in northern Illinois.
