GOLF ROUNDUP: Ottawa earns regional crown

Ottawa wins regional title

LA SALLE – The Pirates took 337 strokes as a team Monday to win the IHSA Class 2A La Salle-Peru Regional at Oak Ridge Golf Course, the program’s first regional title since 1999.

T.J. McDonnell’s 77 was good for second overall, a shot behind medalist Deven Stewart of Freeport. Jonathan Cooper finished fifth overall with an 83.

L-P (339) and Rock Falls (341) claimed the other two team advancing spots. Among the 10 advancing individuals wasΒ Streator senior Jacob Magana, who finished third overall with an 80. The Bulldogs finished with 372 strokes to finish sixth overall.

Next up is the Burlington Central Sectional at Whisper Creek Golf Course in Huntley on Monday, Oct. 14. The Pirates will be seeking its first trip to State since 2012, a year in which they won the sectional after finishing runner-up in the regional tournament.

Yegge and Flynn of Seneca, Marquette’s Kissel move on

DWIGHT – Seneca and Marquette will have golfers on the course next week, but neither advanced as a team at Monday’s IHSA Class 1A Dwight Regional at Dwight Country Club.

Brett Yegge carded an 81 and Holden Flynn posted an 84 for Seneca, which tallied 353 strokes overall to place fifth as a team.

Marquette was ninth with 407 strokes, although senior Sean Kissel posted an 86 to claim the final advancing spot.

Cory Hundman of Bloomington Central Catholic carded a 74 to earn medalist honors. El Paso-Gridley was the team regional champion with 314 strokes, and advances along with BCC (325) and Tri-Valley (337).

EPG hosts the sectional on Monday, Oct. 14 at El Paso Golf Course.

Baker advances for Newark-Serena

SPRING VALLEY – The Norsemen placed fourth at the IHSA Class 1A Saint Bede Regional on Monday, posting 376 strokes at Spring Creek Golf Course to finish 17 shots out of an advancing top three spot.

Serena senior Connor Baker battled to an 89, which was enough to advance to the Aquin Sectional on Monday, Oct. 14 at Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport.

Putnam County’s Ian Roach fired a 75 to take medalist. Riverdale won the regional title with 318 strokes, followed by Putnam County (356) and Saint Bede (359).

The Bruins were led by Nathan Potthoff, who posted an 80 that was fifth-best on the day.
