Los Angeles trailed by 19 before shutting down Chicago in the fourth quarter during the finale of a three-game trip.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Patrick Marleau celebrated his 800th consecutive game by scoring a goal, and the San Jose Sharks snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. The Sharks had been outscored 22-8 during the skid and failed to earn a point or hold a lead at any point during a stretch that left last season’s Western Conference runners-up near the bottom of the standings.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Newcomer Jahmi’us Ramsey led No. 13 Texas Tech with 19 points as the much-changed Red Raiders opened the season with an 85-60 win over Eastern Illinois. The opener came seven months Tech lost in overtime to Virginia in the national championship team. Davide Moretti, the only returning starter from last season’s team, had 13 points.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Justin Smith matched his career high with 24 points and Al Durham added 21 to lead the Indiana Hoosiers past Western Illinois 98-65. Indiana has won 21 of its last 22 season openers and improved to 99-21 all-time in the first game. Western Illinois (0-1) was led by Kobe Webster with 18 points and Zion Young with 12.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Andres Feliz scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Illinois beat Nicholls State 78-70 in overtime in a season opener for both teams. Ayo Dosunmu scored 21, Giorgi Bezhanishvili added 11 points, and freshman big man Kofi Cockburn had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Fighting Illini.
CHICAGO (AP) — Paul Reed tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead DePaul to a 72-54 win over Alcorn State. Charlie Moore had 14 points for DePaul, Romeo Weems added 13 points and Jaylen Butz had nine points and eight rebounds. The Blue Demons led from wire to wire, scored 21 points on the fast break and 16 off of 17 Alcorn State turnovers.
