US EPA expects zinc smelting cleanup plans in April

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency can’t say yet exactly when zinc smelting contamination cleanup will begin in the DePue area. There are about 300 more residential yards to test and already 357 known to need soil replacement.

Public Affairs Specialist Adrian Palomeque says the agency expects to get cleanup plans in April. Those will be reviewed and the agency will have a public meeting.

The Mineral Point Zinc Company operation that was in DePue from 1905 to about 1990 has left zinc, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and manganese in the area. Current owners and responsible parties include Exxon/Mobile and Viacom.
