The league says it will use the hiatus to determine its next steps. The NBA had been considering playing in empty arenas or moving games to cities less affected by the virus.
The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will be held without fans. NCAA President Mark Emmert cited the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in a statement announcing the decision about March Madness yesterday.
The NHL is continuing its season for now. The league issued a statement Wednesday night saying that they are aware of the NBA’s decision to suspend play due to the coronavirus. A further update is expected today following a consultation with medical experts and further evaluation of the league’s options. Ten games are on the slate tonight.
Number-22 Illinois opens play in the Big Ten Tournament tomorrow in Indianapolis. There will be limited attendance at all remaining Big Ten Tournament games over concerns about the corona outbreak.
Elsewhere in college basketball, 13th seed Northwestern fell to number-12 Minnesota 74-57 in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, 10th seed DePaul upset number-7 Xavier 71-67 in the first round of the Big East Tournament and 7th seed Notre Dame cruised past number-10 Boston College 80-58 in the second round of the ACC Tournament. Today 4th seed Northern Illinois faces number-12 Miami-Ohio in the MAC Tournament.

Patrick Kane scored twice as the Blackhawks repelled the Sharks 6-2 at the United Center. Corey Crawford logged 34 saves for Chicago, which is six points out of the second wild card spot in the West. The Blackhawks host the Senators tomorrow night.
The White Sox are off today after yesterday’s game against the Rockies was canceled because of rain. The Sox host the Cubs tomorrow with Reynaldo López getting the start.
