The Illinois High School Association is ending the boy’s basketball season early because of the coronavirus pandemic. The IHSA decided last night to cancel the rest of the boys state basketball tournament. All postseason events for Scholastic Bowl, drama and group Interpretation, music, debate and journalism were also called off.
The college basketball season is over. The NCAA canceled its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments because of the pandemic. The governing body of collegiate sports also called off all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. The decision was made several hours after a number of men’s basketball conference tournaments had been canceled, including the Big Ten.
Professional sports are on hold due to the coronavirus. The Cubs, Cardinals and Sox are out of action after Major League Baseball decided to cancel all remaining spring training games and delay the start of the 2020 regular season by at least two weeks. The Bulls and Blackhawks are in a holding pattern after the NBA and NHL decided to suspend their seasons. Chicago Fire FC games are delayed after Major League Soccer suspended match play for at least 30 days. That decision includes the Fire’s homecoming match at Soldier Field on March 21st. All tickets already purchased for the home opener will be honored for the rescheduled date.
After playing the first round on Thursday, the PGA is now canceling the rest of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The PGA issued a statement saying it has also decided to cancel all PGA Tour events, across all Tours, through the Valero Texas Open at the end of the month. That would make The Masters the next scheduled event April 9th in Augusta, Georgia.
The NFL is going ahead with the new league year on Wednesday, but has canceled its annual meeting later this month in Florida due to the virus pandemic. Players are still expected to vote on the new CBA Saturday. The franchise tag deadline is Monday. Teams can also start talking to free agents on Monday.
