Mendota restricts store access

Mendota Mayor David Boelk is putting restrictions in place meant to curtail the spread of coronavirus at stores. He is doing so under an emergency declaration approved by the city council.

Stores are now required to only let one customer in per 100 square feet in the store and only allow one person per each shopping cart. Anyone under age eighteen is banned, except in rare circumstances where a minor is living alone.

Mayor Boelk says city hall can possibly help with some situations – like if a single parent doesn’t have someone else at home to watch their child.

Police aren’t writing tickets yet, but Boelk says fines could be introduced if people aren’t complying. He doesn’t think the rules are an overreaction at all.

Boelk says he’s received good feedback from the public about the new restrictions.
