ROOTS with ROBB: Classic Album TEMPLE OF THE DOG

By Billy Thompson Apr 2, 2020 | 4:33 PM

I’m not gonna lie, I’m a card-carrying member of the Pearl Jam Ten Club.  I was also fortunate to see Chris Cornell 14 times before he passed.  Of all the rock stars that have passed, Cornell’s death is still the one that affects me the most.  His voice was beyond words. So to say I’m a big fan of Temple of the Dog is an understatement.  The stories behind these songs, the way it came together, everything that followed and what it meant to the development of then Mookie Blaylock (Pearl Jam) and Soundgarden is astronomical.  As amazing as Soundgarden was, it was refreshing to hear Cornell’s softer side.  He would sometimes bring that into play with Soundgarden post Temple (not too often) and then on solo albums.  And, as you listen to the episode, you’ll hear just how important it was for the template of what Pearl Jam would become.

There’s EXTRA Bonus Content:  Robb and I review the new Pearl Jam album, Gigaton.  That review starts at 10:30.  EXTRA EXTRA Bonus Content at 16:40 with the making of ‘Hunger Strike.’

I was fortunate enough to see Temple of the Dog reunite on back to back nights part of Pearl Jam 20 up at Alpine Valley in 2011.  Here’s a fan’s well done video/audio capture of those 2 nights.
