Grand Ridge water tower project generated voter turnout boost

By WCMY News Apr 4, 2020 | 4:18 AM

Grand Ridge voters were very interested in the water tower referendum they approved. The LaSalle County election canvass published on Tuesday shows 40% of Farm Ridge Township’s 595 registered voters cast ballots in the election.

Not all of the township’s residents live in the village, so voter turnout for Grand Ridge could actually be higher. But the 40% figure compares to just 23% of the county’s 70,553 voters casting ballots.

And of the 239 who cast ballots in the township, 43 asked for non-partisan ballots. They were all Grand Ridge residents and could vote only on the referendum.

Voter turnout and non-partisan ballot requests in the Streator and Seneca areas were much lower. The precincts around Seneca had just 21% turnout and only 2% of those who voted took non-partisan ballots to weigh in on cannabis sales. Precincts around Streator had just 22% turnout. They also had just 2% asking for non-partisan ballots to vote only on the library tax referendum.
