ROOTS with ROBB: KINGS OF LEON

By Billy Thompson Apr 16, 2020 | 2:51 PM

Unique sound?  Check.  Intriguing backstory?  Check.  Struggle to match up to their previous success?  You betcha.  Kings of Leon are a unique band to do a deep dive on, because it’s really like there are 2 different KOLs.  The pre and post Only By Night.  Personally, I was a fan of the pre-Kings sound.  They had a bit of a different vibe and sound to them, and were solid live.  And then Only By Night and those 2 massive singles (Sex on Fire & Use Somebody) happened, and since, they really haven’t been the same band. The question is why?  Robb & I try and get to that answer in an EXTENDED Bonus Content.  Bonus Content starts at 9:15 with a mashup of KOL with QOTSA & GnR, followed by the influence of ‘Molly’s Chambers’ at 11:08, then discussion on Caleb’s voice at 11:57 and at 12:30 finish with a lengthy chat about bands that change their sound to fit more into pop music and sell more records.

Our Roots Song of the Day:

This song is a perfect blend of the the old KOL sound and that U2-esque sound they landed in.  Because of the Times has some great songs on it.
