Marseilles implements city fines to use instead of criminal charges for businesses disobeying executive orders

The Marseilles City Council last week passed an ordinance that establishes city level violations for disobeying rules set by the governor during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Jim Hollenbeck says he doesn’t want charge business owners with reckless conduct for disobeying aspects of the executive order.

Under the city ordinance, violators would be issued a city ticket and fine that could be dealt with at the city level. Hollenbeck says he hopes to not have to use the ordinance to fine anyone.
