Thursday Sports Update

After canceling due to Wednesday’s wet weather forecast, LaSalle Speedway has rescheduled its reopening. The UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour will race at the  Speedway on Sunday, July 26. It had originally been scheduled for July 15. LaSalle Speedway president Tony Izzo said the track will follow all Phase 4 guidelines, including 20% capacity, 6-foot social distancing between groups and the wearing of masks.

 

Chase Elliott is the winner of NASCAR’s All-Star Race.  He beat Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick for the million-dollar prize at Bristol Motor Speedway.  About 20-thousand fans were on hand at the giant venue that holds more than 160-thousand. 

 

Dominik Kubalik is a finalist for the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie.  The Blackhawks winger led all rookies with 30 goals during the 2019-20 season. Kubalik added 16 assists to lead rookie forwards with 46 points in 68 games played.  

 

 The Cubs are hopeful that Anthony Rizzo can avoid being placed on the injured list for Opening Day later this month.  The veteran first baseman is dealing with a nagging back issue.  An MRI showed he has rib inflammation, which is contributing to spasms in his lower back. 

 

With training camp approaching, the NFL and Players Association remain at odds over a return to work.  Owners will be on a call this Friday for an update.  The NFL wants two preseason games, no daily testing, and positive COVID-19 results not to be covered by injury protections.

 

The Tournament of Roses Parade was called off earlier Wednesday but the Rose Bowl game is still on for New Year’s Day.  Bowl officials said that they’re working with the College Football Playoff committee to explore what the season will look like amid the pandemic.
