Monday Sports Update

The White Sox defeated the Cubs 7-3 in exhibition at a near empty Wrigley Field. Ross Detwiler got the win in relief after striking out four over two innings.  Jason Kipnis belted a solo home run for the Cubs.  

 Lucas Giolito will be the Opening Day starter for the White Sox on Friday.  Manager Rick Renteria announced yesterday that the right-hander will face the Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field to begin the 60-game shortened season.  

 Anthony Rizzo is optimistic he will be ready for Opening Day on Friday.  The Cubs’ first baseman is dealing with a nagging back issue. 

The Chicago Fire fell 2-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes in its second match of the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando.  The Fire will take on Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday. 

 Jon Rahm is the new number-one ranked golfer in the world after winning The Memorial tournament in Dublin Ohio on Sunday

Austin Dillon edged out rookie Tyler Reddick to win the NASCAR Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway.  An estimated 15-to-20 thousand fans turned out to watch the race at the Fort Worth track. 

Serena Williams will return to the court next month at the Top Seed Open in Lexington.  The 23-time Grand Slam singles champ has not played in a sanctioned event since February because of the pandemic.  Women’s and men’s pro tennis are to resume in August.

NFL players are sounding off about wanting a safer environment to work in.  Several players Tweeted out on Sunday urging the league to listen to its experts’ guidelines and recommendations on safely opening up training camps.  They used the hashtag “we want to play,” saying they just want to do so in the safest way possible.
