Monday Sports Update

The Illinois Elementary School Association announced on Friday that the board voted to cancel the regular season and IESA state series in baseball, softball, boys and girls golf and boys and girls cross country.  There are no plans to try and reschedule the activities or conduct them later in the school year due in part to when and if Illinois high schools play their contests. A decision on IHSA fall sports is expected on Wednesday. The decision on girls basketball was delayed. Their first day of practice is scheduled for August 31. The board will meet again in late August to make a decision regarding the start of the girls season.

Luis Robert hit his first career homer yesterday but that was it as the White Sox  were routed by the Twins 14-2 in Chicago.  Reynaldo Lopez gave up four runs over just two-thirds of an inning to take the loss. 

 

 Willson Contreras hit a home run and an RBI double as the Cubs hammered the Brewers 9-1 in Chicago. Tyler Chatwood gave up just three hits over six innings to get the win.  The North Siders have taken their first two of three games. Chicago opens a four-game series at Cincinnati tonight.

 

The Cardinals fell to the Pirates 5-1 in St. Louis.  Dakota Hudson gave up four runs over four innings to take the loss.  The Cards will face the Twins for two games in Minnesota starting tomorrow.

 

The Blackhawks flew to Edmonton yesterday where they will enter the NHL bubble to compete for the Stanley Cup. The Hawks will also have goalie Corey Crawford back in front of the net after missing the start of training camp due to testing positive for the Covid19 virus. Chicago will face the Oilers Saturday in the best-of-five qualifying round. 

 

Michael Thompson birdied two of the last three holes to win at the 3M Open Sunday at TPC Twin Cities. Adam Long finished two strokes back  to finish in second.

 

 The Red Stars have lost the NWSL Challenge Cup Final two years in a row now after a 2-0 loss to the Houston Dash in Utah.

 

In The WNBA the Chicago Sky beat the Las Vegas Aces 88-86 in the season opener for both teams. 

 

The NFL will start to welcome players to training camp tomorrow.   Players will need two negative tests for the coronavirus over the first four days.  They will be permitted to enter on the fifth day.
