Thursday Sports Update

Yesterday the Brewers’ pitching combined to throw nine scoreless innings as they snapped the White Sox six-game winning streak 1-0 in Chicago. Dallas Keuchel took the loss.  

 

The Cubs scored twice in each of the final two innings to pull away for a 6-1 win over the Royals in Kansas City.  Javier Baez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the north-siders which has won six in-a-row to improve to 10-and-2.  Yu Darvish allowed one run in seven innings for his second win.  The Cubs go for the four-game sweep today.

 

The Cardinals are scheduled to return to action tomorrow night when they host their  rival Chicago Cubs in the opener of a three-game series at Busch Stadium.  The Cards have been off since last Wednesday due to a COVID-19 outbreak.  St. Louis sits at 2-and-3 on the season.

 

 The Blackhawks are one win away from advancing to the first round after a 4-3 victory over the Oilers.  Chicago takes a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five qualifying round series.  The ‘Hawks can close it out with a win tomorrow in Game Four.

 

There will be no fall sports championships in the NCAA Division Two and Three this year. The fall sports championships were canceled amid the ongoing pandemic.   Other divisions have until August 21st to make a decision.

 

The first major tournament of the golf schedule gets underway today as the first round of the PGA Championship takes place at TPC Harding Park. Brooks Koepka  is two-time defending champion and is looking to make it three in a row.  Tiger Woods is making his second appearance on the tour since play resumed.

 

In local sports..

Marquette Academy 2021 Football schedule has been announced by the Lincoln Trail Conference. The seven game regular season will start friday march 5th with the Crusaders hosting Mid-County. The IHSA has set February 15th as the start date for practices and has not determined the playoff format.

 

The Daily Times reports a hole-in-one at Pine Hills in Ottawa. 79-year-old John Flamini sank the 132 yard shot on hole number 6 with a 7 iron. Flamini carded his fourth career hole-in-one and first at an Illinois course during Pine Hills Senior League play on July 30.
