ROOTS with ROBB: Joan Jett

By Billy Thompson Aug 13, 2020 | 1:25 PM

We continue a month of female artists with Joan Jett, the Godmother of Punk, but is she really?  While going through her catalog this past week, I was amazed at how little ‘Punk Rock’ I actually heard.  But then again, my idea of punk music is my opinion, and so is the meaning of Punk Rock.  The fact that pushed her way through to get her music released, even starting her own label (Blackheart Records) with her longtime producer/manager Kenny Laguna because no label would take her a female rock artist.  She absolutely deserves credit for blazing a path that way.  But musically, I felt her material came up short.  There’s a lot of covers, and then later in her career, help with songwriting from some bigger named song-writers.
