Thursday Sports Update

The White Sox committed four errors leading to four unearned runs in their 8-1 loss to the Twins at Target Field.  Starter Reynaldo López dropped to 0-and-2 after giving up three runs, including two unearned, in less than two innings of work. The Sox have lost two straight, dropping to second place in the AL Central.  They visit the Royals tonight with Dylan Cease taking the mound against The Royals Danny Duffy. Pre-game begins at 6:30 with the first pitch at 7:05pm on the home for White Sox baseball 1430 WCMY..

José Abreu was named the American League Player of the Month for August and Luis Robert was recognized as the top American League rookie for the month of August.  Both Abreu and Robert helped the Sox go 22-and-14 through their first 36 games.

 

Kyle Hendricks tossed six strong innings as the Cubs blasted the Pirates 8-2 in Pittsburgh.   Javier Baez knocked a three-run homer in the fourth to erase a 1-0 deficit.  Anthony Rizzo tacked on a two-run single as Chicago won its third straight.  The series wraps up tonight with Alec Mills facing Pittsburgh’s JT Brubaker.

 

The Reds rallied in the bottom of the 9th to a 4-3 win over the Cardinals in Cincinnati. Brad Miller and Yadier Molina homered for the Cards, who snapped a three-game winning streak. St. Louis is off today before visiting the Cubs tomorrow night. 

 

The Mets and former White Sox pitcher Tom Seaver passed away at 75 years old  due to complications from dementia and COVID-19.  The Hall of Famer  led the New York Mets to a World Series title in 1969 and won his 300th game with the Sox in 1985.

 

 The Chicago Fire and Cincinnati battled to a scoreless draw at Nippert Stadium.  The Fire return home to face the New England Revolution at Soldier Field on Sunday night.

 

The Chicago Sky fell to the Minnesota Lynx 86-83 in the WNBA, The Sky face the Washington Mystics tomorrow night.   

 

The women’s top seed is out at the U.S. Open.  Karolina Pliskova lost to Caroline Garcia in the second round.  Men’s top seed Novak Djokovic  advances and Serena Williams plays her third-round match tonight.

 

 

Local Sports

In golf, The Ottawa Pirates defeated Morris 157-163 yesterday at Deer Park  bringing their season record to 2-0. Jonathan Cooper and Drake Kaufman led the Pirates with each scoring  38 on the day.

At Pine Hills, the Crusaders defeated Parkview Christian led by Kaitlyn Magoonaugh’s score of 42.

Cross Country

At Catlin Park, the Lady Pirates defeated the visiting Lady Hubs 21-36 with Grace Carroll and Lainey Billings finishing first and second overall.

The boys Liam Tripple and Aaron Noble placed first and second but the team came up short  26-33, against Rochelle.
