Tuesday Sports Update

Tonight  the first place  White Sox visit the Pirates in Pittsburgh.   The Sox Dylan Cease will face Joe Musgrove.  Pre-game begins at 5:30 with the first pitch at 6:05 on the home for White Sox Baseball 1430 WCMY.

 

Kyle Hendricks allowed just one run as the Cubs beat the Cardinals 5-1 at Wrigley Field.   Jason Kipnis doubled in a run in the fourth and in the fifth, Willson Contreras singled in a pair as Chicago snapped a three-game losing streak. Tonight the Cubs will play the Reds at Wrigley Field and The Cards will host the Twins in a doubleheader today.

The Cubs are gearing up for the season’s stretch run. The North Siders added versatile utility man Ildemaro Vargas to the active roster after claiming him off waivers over the weekend from the Twins.  Chicago also claimed speedy center fielder Billy Hamilton from the Mets.

 

The Bears are gearing for their first game of 2020 of the NFL season.  Chicago visits the Lions on Sunday with Mitch Trubisky being named the starting quarterback over veteran Nick Foles.

 

In the US Open, Third-seeded Serena Williams is into the quarterfinals. Williams is seeking her 24th career Grand Slam singles title, which would tie Margaret Court for the most all-time.

Also in tennis, Top-ranked Ash Barty will not defend her French Open title because of concerns over traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic. Barty also skipped the U.S. Open.

 

Pro golfer Dustin Johnson is the 2020 FedEx Cup playoff champion. Johnson shot a two-under par on Monday to close out a three-shot win at the Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.

 

Last night there was college football BYU routed Navy 55-3 at an empty stadium at the Naval Academy. The Cougar’s  Tyler Allgeier ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns.

  • Marquette’s Lucas Hoffman placed first with a time of 16:56
  • Billy Glasscock from Seneca was second with a time of 17:35.
  • The girls division Seneca’s Ashley Alsvig was first with a time of 21:13
  • Amber Vroman placed second with a time of 21:19.
  • Ottawa’s Grace Carroll’s time was 22:12 to finish third.
  • Morris Redskins won the boys division .
  • Seneca Fighting Irish won the girls division.

 

Over the Labor Day weekend Josh Gass won the Raymond J. Berry Memorial and is now a four time champion at the event.
