Wednesday Sports Update

Last night Yasmani Grandal crushed a two-run homer in a three-run fifth for the White Sox, but the Pirates rallied for a 5-4 win in Pittsburgh.  José Abreu extended his hit streak to 21 games and Eloy Jiménez added an RBI double for Chicago, which snapped a four-game winning streak.   The series resumes tonight with Dane Dunning taking on Pittsburgh’s  JT Brubaker.  Pre-game begins at 5:30 with the first pitch at 6:05 on your home for White Sox baseball 1430 WCMY..

The Sox are getting some help back, left-handed reliever Gio Gonzalez is returning from the injured list. Gonzalez was injured on August 30th with a right groin strain.

 

The Cubs Alec Mills fired six shutout innings as the North-Siders blanked the Reds 3-0 at Wrigley Field.  David Bote hit a two-run triple in the second inning and Javy Baez tripled in a run in the third for the Cubs, who have won two-in-a-row. The series resumes tonight with Yu Darvish taking the mound against Cincinnati’s Trevor Bauer.

 

The Cardinals split a doubleheader with the Twins at Busch Stadium.  Carlos Martínez was tagged with the loss in Game One after giving up four runs on seven hits in three innings for St. Louis.  The Cards scored five-runs in the third to secure a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.  St. Louis is off today before hosting the Tigers tomorrow.

 

The Chicago Sky face the Atlanta Dream tonight in the WNBA.  The Sky is looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

 

The Bears will be without kicker Eddy Piñeiro for at least the first three games of the season.  The team placed him on injured reserve with a groin injury.  Piñeiro is eligible to return for Chicago’s Week 4 home contest against the Colts.  Cairo Santos is expected to kick against the Lions in Sunday’s season opener.

 

At the U.S Open,  28th seed American Jennifer Brady has advanced to the women’s semifinals in New York.  Third-seeded Serena Williams will play her women’s quarterfinal match today.

 

Local Sports

In Cross Country, The Ottawa Pirates  lost 15-50 to their host Kaneland.

  • Liam Tipple led the Pirates with a time of 18:49

 

The Lady Pirates also fell to Kaneland 19-41.

  • Grace Carroll  finished second and led the team with a time of 20:56

 

The Streator girls cross country team defeated Tri-Point and their host Pontiac.

  • Abby Seaton won the race, her second victory of this season.

 

The boys team finished second to Pontiac.

  •  The Bulldogs were led by Kody Danko’s fourth place finish.
