Monday Sports Update

Yesterday Eloy Jimenez hit a tie breaking home run in the fourth inning and the White Sox went on to beat the Tigers 5-2 in Chicago.  Yoan Moncada went 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Sox swept the three-game series.  The SouthSiders welcome the Twins tonight with Dylan Cease on the mound against Minnesota’s José Berríos. Pre-game starts at 6:35 with the first pitch at 7:10 on the home for White Sox baseball 1430 WCMY..

 

Alec Mills will go down in Cubs history after throwing the 16th no-hitter in franchise history.  Mills struck out five and walked three as Chicago destroyed the Brewers 12-0 in Milwaukee.  So far Alec Mills and White Sox Lucas Giolito are the only pitchers with no-hitters this season. The Cubs are off today before hosting the Indians tomorrow night.

 

Three Reds homered as they doubled up the Cardinals 10-5 in St. Louis.  Matt Carpenter doubled and drove in a run for the Cards. The Cardinals are in Milwaukee today for a doubleheader against the Brewers.

 

Mitch Trubisky threw three fourth quarter touchdown passes as the Chicago Bears rallied to beat the Lions 27-23 in the season opener in Detroit.   Jimmy Graham, Anthony Miller and Javon Wims all had TD catches for the Bears. The Bears host the Giants next Sunday.

Elsewhere in the NFC North, the Packers outgunned the Vikings 43-34.

 

The Chicago Fire battled to a 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew at Soldier Field in the MLS. The Fire will play on the road against Orlando on Saturday.

 

At The US Open,  Dominic Thiem  rallied from two sets down to become the men’s US Open Champion. Naomi Osaka was crowned champion by beating Victoria Azarenka in Saturday’s women’s final.

 

Over at the PGA, Stewart Clink won the Safeway Open in Napa, California.

 

Brad Keselowski  won the second race of NASCAR’s Cup series playoffs at Richmond Raceway.

 

 

 

Local Sports

Both Streator’s boys and Girls cross country teams Placed second on Saturday at Morris High School. Abby Seaton captured second place to lead the Lady Bulldogs and Kody Danko placed third in the boys event.
