Thursday Sports Update

The White Sox’ six game winning streak is over following a 5-1 loss to the Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field.  José Abreu homered for Chicago’s lone run. Even with the defeat, the White Sox magic number to clinch a postseason berth dropped to one.  The series wraps up today with Reynaldo López facing the Twins. Pre-game at 12:35 with the first pitch at 1:10pm on the home for White Sox baseball.

 

Javy Baez hit a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Cubs past the Indians 3-2 at Wrigley Field. The Northsiders are off today before hosting the Twins tomorrow night.

 

The Cardinals split a second doubleheader this week with the Brewers in Milwaukee.  Tyler O’Neill homered and drove in two as St. Louis took Game One 4-2. Milwaukee bounced back, winning Game two 6-0.  The Cards visits the Pirates tonight with Dakota Hudson getting the ball against The Pirates.

 

The Dodgers are the first team in baseball to clinch a playoff berth.  It will be LA’s eighth straight trip to the postseason.

 

The Big Ten Conference will have football this year.  Conference officials voted yesterday to resume the 2020 football season starting the weekend of October 24th.  The Big Ten Championship Game is scheduled for December 19th in Indianapolis.

The NCAA men’s and women’s basketball seasons will begin Nov. 25, the day before Thanksgiving. The Division I Council voted to push the start date back from November 10th as one of several precautions against the spread of the coronavirus.

The 120th U.S. open tees off today in New York.  Defending champion Gary Woodland is set to tee off this afternoon.

 

The Browns host the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football tonight in Cleveland.  Both teams look to bounce back from Week One losses.

The Marquette Academy football program will join the Lincoln Trail Conference this coming season.   The Crusaders became an Independent after last season when the Northeastern Athletic Conference dissolved

 

The Ottawa Pirates varsity team defeated LP at Oak Ridge Golf Course 167-173.

  • Jonathan Cooper led all golfers with a score of 39.

 

The JV boys won with a score of 187 over L-P’s 204 at Oak Ridge.

  • Ottawa’s Turner Love was the overall winner with a personal best score of 43.

 

In Tennis

The JV Lady Pirates outscored Morris 4-1

  • Jenna Smithmeyer and Emma Cushing won in singles
  • Rylee O’Fallon & Isabel Heimsoth and the team of Layne Krug & Abi Morris were winners in doubles.
