If severe storms and power outages have you thinking about backup generators, your power company may want to hear from you. Ameren Illinois spokesman Brian Bretsch says there are two kinds. Each comes with safety considerations.

For those who want something permanently installed and possibly automatic, there are permanently installed generators that can power a whole house. It needs to have a transfer switch to keep energy from going the wrong way down the power lines.

Portable generators aren’t going to power an entire home, so you have to choose which appliances are most important.

And never refuel a generator while it’s running or still hot.
