Tuesday Sports Update

The Illinois High School Association board of directors will meet October 28 to determine the plan for winter sports for the 2020-21 school year and to announce more details on a plan moving forward.

The board also granted athletes in what will be spring and summer sports in 2021 the ability to play for both a school team and a non-school team at the same time for the 2021 season.

 

Illinois is kicking off the 2020 football season at number-14 Wisconsin on Friday.  That is the latest start to the Illini football season in the 131-year history of the program.  The Badgers won’t have fans at Camp Randall Stadium due to COVID-19.  The Big Ten is playing a 9-game conference-only schedule due to the ongoing pandemic.

 

There was a double-header on Monday Night Football.  The Chiefs got by the Bills 26-17 in Orchard Park.  Patrick Mahomes threw two TD passes as Kansas City improved to 5-and-1.  Josh Allen had two TD passes for Buffalo, which fell to 4-and-2.

Kyler Murray threw two TD’s and ran for another as the Cardinals crushed the Cowboys 38-10 at Dallas. 

 

The World Series begins tonight.  The Tampa Bay Rays take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game One of the best-of-seven Fall Classic at Globe Life Field in Arlington.  Tyler Glasnow will start in the opener for the Rays.  The Dodgers counter with Clayton Kershaw on the mound.

 

The Chicago Fire away match against Minnesota United that was postponed last week is being rescheduled for November 4th.  The match was originally set to take place October 14th, but was postponed due to a suspected case of COVID-19 among the Minnesota United team.  The Fire returns to league play this weekend when it hosts the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.  

 

 Kobe Bryant’s jersey is going down in history.  The former Laker legend’s 2008 NBA Finals Jersey is now hanging at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.  Bryant is known for wearing the jersey in Game Five of the ’08 NBA Finals, which was the game the Lakers beat the Boston Celtics.

 

Hall of Fame hockey broadcaster Mike “Doc” Emrick is retiring. The announcement was shared by NBC Sports.  Emrick has called 22 Stanley Cup Finals and more than 37-hundred professional and Olympic hockey games.  He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
