Foot traffic on Rutland Street in Marseilles soon to be accommodated by a sidewalk

Marseilles set to obtain a sidewalk improvement grant from IDOT for over half a million dollars.

Mayor Jim Hollenbeck explains:

The City of Marseilles passed phase one of a grant application for a sidewalk on the corner Rutland Street at Bratton Avenue north of downtown. The sidewalk would continue up Rutland Street until 11th street.

Phase two and three include final design and construction. The City of Marseilles only needs to prove they can provide the balance of $111,163.00. Once that hurdle is passed, construction will begin.
The finished project will mean seniors and kids can walk up a sidewalk instead of Rutland street itself.

Business’ such as a beauty parlor and a Dollar General can again count on foot traffic.

The City of Marseilles’ expects safety for pedestrians to vastly improve once a new sidewalk starting on the corner of Rutland Street and Bratton Avenue and up Rutland for over a mile is installed.

No deadline for completion has been set but summer of 2021 is likely.
Seniors and kids on bikes have to travel on Rutland Street itself currently.

$555,815.00 in construction costs will be covered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
