Friday Sports Update

Illinois is set to open the 2020 football season at number-14 Wisconsin.  The Illini upset the Badgers last season, 24-23. There will be no fans tonight at Camp Randall Stadium due to COVID-19. The Illini earned its first bowl bid since 2014 last year but is searching for its first winning season since a 7-6 finish in 2011.

 

Northwestern Kicks off their 2020 football season Saturday as they host Maryland. Notre Dame continue their season on the road at Pittsburgh.

 

On Thursday night football, the Eagles won in the final minute over the Giants 22-21 in Philadelphia. The Eagles improved to 2-4-and-1.  The Giants slipped to 1-and-6.

 

First place in the NFC north Chicago Bears are off this weekend but will visit the Rams for a clash on Monday Night Football.  Chicago is 5-and-1. LA enters at 4-and-2 and is tied for second in the NFC West.

 

The Dodgers and Rays play game 3 of the World Series tonight in Arlington Texas. Tampa Bay tied the best of seven series winning Game Two 6-4 on Wednesday.

 

White Sox first baseman José Abreu is the American League Outstanding Player in the 2020 Players Choice Awards.  He joins Frank Thomas and Jermaine Dye as the only White Sox players to win the award.

 

In the PGA, Sebastian Munoz led all golfers after round one of the Zozo Championship at Sherwood.

 

Danielle Kang and Jennifer Song are tied on the leaderboard after the first round of the LPGA inaugural – “Drive On Championship” at Reynolds Lake in Greensboro Georgia.

 

Michael Jordan has selected 23 as the car number for his new NASCAR team in 2021. Jordan and three-time Daytona 500 champion Denny Hamlin had already announced they are forming a NASCAR team with Bubba Wallace as the driver.

 

The NASCAR Cup Series continues Sunday in the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

 

The NHL is postponing the Winter Classic and All-Star Game next season due to Covid-19. The New Year’s Day Winter Classic was to feature the Blues and Wild in Minnesota. The league still hopes to start in January.
