Friday Sports Update

Tony La Russa is returning to the White Sox to be their new manager.  The three-time World Series champion began his 33-year managerial career with the Sox in 1979.  He posted a 522-and-510 record with Chicago before being fired in 1986.  The 76-year-old went on to manage the Athletics and most recently the Cardinals from 1996-2011.  He helped guide St. Louis to a pair of World Series rings in a six-year span and has been named Manager of the Year four times in his career.  La Russa ranks third all-time with 2,728 managerial wins. 

 

 A.J. Hinch could be resuming his managerial career in Motown.  ESPN reports the former Astros skipper is working on a deal to become manager of the Tigers, replacing the retired Ron Gardenhire.  Hinch was suspended this season for his role in Houston’s cheating scandal.

 

Illinois welcomes Purdue tomorrow for its home opener.  The Illini fell to number-11 Wisconsin this past Saturday in the season opener.  The Boilermakers defeated Iowa in their opener.

 

Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is positive for COVID-19.  Head coach Dabo Swinney revealed the news with permission from Lawrence, saying he is in isolation with mild symptoms and doing well.  Lawrence will miss tomorrow’s game against Boston College.

 

The Bears host the Saints on Sunday at Soldier Field.  Chicago is 5-and-2 after losing to the Rams this past Monday night.  New Orleans enters at 4-and-2. 

 

The Fire FC are at Nashville SC tomorrow night.  Chicago fell 2-1 to the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday.  Robert Beric scored the Fire’s lone goal.

 

 At the PGA Peter Malnati finished with a birdie and a smile for a 63 and a one-shot lead after round one in the Bermuda Championship. 

 

The NASCAR Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway is Sunday.  The 500-lap race is the last chance for drivers to secure a spot in the Championship Four on November 8th.
