Friday Sports Update

Last night on Thursday Night football, Quarterback Justin Herbert snuck in for the win on the goal line as the Los Angeles Chargers outlasted the now 7-7 Raiders 30-27 in overtime in Las Vegas.  The Chargers moved to 5-and-9. 

The Chicago Bears will try to keep their playoff hopes alive when they visit the Vikings on Sunday in Minnesota.  Both teams enter at 6-and-7.  The Bears snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the Texans this past Sunday.

Elsewhere in the NFC North,  The Green Bay Packers will welcome the Panthers to Lambeau Field on Saturday night and The Detroit Lions travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans.

 

Big weekend for college football.

Number 2 Notre Dame and fourth ranked Clemson are getting ready for their rematch in the ACC championship game on Saturday. Last time they played The Fighting Irish rallied for a 47-40 double overtime win over the Tigers on November 7th. Clemson was without starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence.  Both teams believe they’ll have all their key players available on Saturday.

 

Number 14 Northwestern meets third-ranked Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game for the second time in three years on Saturday. The Wildcats are 6-1 and hoping to pull off one of its biggest wins against the 5-0 Buckeyes.

 

Illinois wraps up the regular season at Penn State on Saturday.  The Illini is playing for the first time this season without Lovie Smith at the helm.  Smith was fired as head coach this past weekend.  Offensive coordinator Rod Smith will be the acting head coach on Saturday.  Illinois comes in at 2-and-5.

 

In College Basketball,  Northern Illinois looks to bounce back from their loss to Iowa when they take on Chicago State tonight in Dekalb. The Huskies are winless at 0-5.

 

Notre Dame is on the road Saturday to face the 5-2 Purdue Boilermakers in Indianapolis. The Fighting Irish are 2-3 on the season. 

 

13th-ranked Illinois travels to take on Rutgers on Sunday.  The Illini cruised past Minnesota 92-65 Tuesday to improve to 5-and-2.  The Scarlet Knights are 5-and-0. Also on Sunday Northwestern will host Michigan State at the Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats are 3-1.

 

The Chicago Bulls wrap up the NBA preseason tonight at the Thunder. The Bulls are 2-and-1 in exhibition play. 

 

Former Yankees reliever Jonathan Holder is joining the Cubs.  Chicago has agreed to terms with the right-hander on a one-year, non-guaranteed deal.  The 27-year-old was 3-and-0 with a 4.98 ERA in 18 relief appearances for the Bronx Bombers last season.

 

 The Blackhawks are still not planning on changing their name and logo despite facing continued scrutiny.  Newly named CEO Danny Wirtz announced yesterday that the franchise will “continue to deepen our commitment to upholding our namesake and our brand.”

 

The PGA Tour isn’t going to require golfers, officials or spectators to be vaccinated for the coronavirus as they look to add more fans in 2021.  Commissioner Jay Monahan said Thursday that vaccination is an individual’s choice and he’s not considering mandating it.
